Thyroid gland is a large ductless gland in the neck which secretes hormones regulating growth and development through the rate of metabolism. Thyroid disease is depending on how much or how little hormones your thyroid makes. The person may often feel restless or tired or the person may gain or lose weight. Women are more likely than men to have thyroid disease especially after pregnancy and after menopause. Thyroid hormones control many activities in body building like how fast you can burn calories and how fast your heart beats.

  • One in eight women will develop thyroi during her lifetime.
  • Thyroid uses iodine a mineral found in save foods and iodized salt to make its hormones. Two important thyroid hormones are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
  • Insufficient hormone production leads to hypothyroidism.

Types of Thyroid

  • Hypothyroidism - A condition in which the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid Hormones this cause gaining weight.
  • Hyperthyroidism - A condition in which there is our production of hormone by the butterfly-shaped gland in the neck this cause loss of weight.

Thyroid hormones helps control the speed of your metabolism. The faster your metabolism the more calories your body will burn at rest. By increasing the protein intake the thyroid may control the higher protein diets helps increase the speed of metabolism.

Some Important Nutrition you need to take-

  • Protein: By increasing it in the diet helps increase the speed of metabolism.
  • Iodine: Iodine is essential mineral that take iodized salt for meals or iodine rich food likefish and dairy products.
  • Selenium: helps the body “activate” thyroid hormones so they can be used by the body. E.g. Eggs, Dairy products, garlic and Onions.
  • Zinc: It activates thyroid hormones. Zinc rich foods you can take like chicken and fish.
  • Dietary Fiber- Consume fiber rich foods, e.g. Flaxseeds, Chia seeds, Whole Grains.

Note: Aerobic exercise, Yoga can help boost your thyroid hormones levels.

Food to Avoid

  • Mustard
  • Radish
  • Soft drinks, Tea, Coffee
  • Cruciferous Veg- Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Spinach, Turnips.
  • Starchy foods- Sweet Potatoes, Peaches, Strawberries, etc.
  • Nuts & Seeds- Millet, Pine seeds, Peanuts, etc.

Diet should be taken in Thyroid

Breakfast- Veg Poha, Butter Milk, fruits.

Lunch- Bowl of salad, Dal, Seasonal cooked vegetables, Wheat/branchapati.

Evening Snacks- Sprouts, Fruits and curd.

Dinner- Bowl of Soup/Salad, Bowl of Vegetables and Wheat chapati.
