The first Summer Youth Olympic Games recently wrapped up in Argentina. The Games commenced on October 6th and ended with a ceremony on October 18th. Indian young players emerged as star performers this time and there were several medals in India’s countries this year. This Youth Olympic medal winning journey was kick started by Suraj Panwar who ended up at second position and bagged a silver medal in 5000m race walk event. After him, Praveen Chitravel bagged a bronze at triple jump for India with a combined score of 31.52 meters and with this jump to victory India’s medal account opened and there was no looking back.

Saurabh Chaudhary Gold medal in 10 meter air pistol with 7.5 points, he is a 16 years old boy from Meerut. Tushar Shahu Mane brought home a silver in 10 meter air rifle with a score of 247.5. India’s teenage shooting sensation Manu Bhaker added another gold medal in women’s 10 meter air pistol category on the third day of the Buenos Aires 2018 games with a score of 236.5. On the second position also an Indian, Mehuli Ghosh walked away with a silver in women’s 10 meter air rifle event.

Simran Ahlawat won a silver in women’s 43kg wrestling and she is the second Indian to win a medal in Youth Olympics. Tababi Devi rose above as the first Indian Judoka (from Manipur) to win a silver in women’s 44kg judo event. Lakshya Sen became second Indian to win a silver in men’s singles badminton.

The thrilling performance of Indian Youth Hockey Team made both men’s and women’s team walk away with a silver each. Indian Men’s team won its first medal in hockey youth Olympics by 2-4 to Malaysia in the finals. Indian women’s team lost the gold by losing to Argentina, nevertheless, it was a great silver that they landed up with. This marked a memorable first campaign at the Youth Olympics for India’s hockey teams.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga won a scintillating gold in weight lifting (62kgs). He is a 15-year-old from Mizoram. He lifted a total of 274kgs (clean and jerk) and was only 1kg short of the senior national record, and easily beat the rest of the field. The commendable victory indeed. The 15-year-old son of farmer and pride of India, Akash Malik became India’s first silver medalist in archery at the Youth Olympic Games, providing a fitting finale to the country’s best-ever campaign at the marquee event here.

India concluded at a total of 13 medals with 3 invaluable gold medals, 9 silver medals and 1 bronze medal.
