Fight Chronic Stress And Depression With Right Nutrition

Overwhelming sadness, low energy, grief, lack of interest in things are normal human experiences and we have different physical & mental reactions to these. Our body responds to some kind of stress by releasing hormones that increase your heart & breathing rates in turn preparing your muscles to respond. So, for immediate short term situations these can be even beneficial for health. It can help you cope with potentially serious situations. But if these stress responses don’t go away within few days and lasts longer, and then this could be a symptom of serious mood disorder which might become a diagnosable condition. Left untreated it can lead to serious health complications and Chronic Stress which can wear you down emotionally on a level till violence to yourself. Now if it won’t remain a stress anymore. It can lead to ‘Major Depressive Disorder’ or ‘Depression’.

The WHO estimates more than 300 million people worldwide are affected by Depression. June'2018 statistics of Depression says - 6.7% people of total population in US and 4.8% in India are suffering from it. Globally, this is one of the leading causes of illness & disability especially among adolescents.

There are different circumstances that can trigger this condition or subsets of it but majorly it includes;

Mental symptoms;

  • Anxiety and Restlessness
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Extreme irritation on minor things

Fortunately, we do have remedies to treat clinical depression. In general, it is a combination of Antidepressants & Psychological counselling. But there are other two major areas which should be approached holistically for a complete healing of body, mind and soul.

In Ayurveda part of medical sciences, Depression is nothing but ‘Too much of Tamas’ in your body. (Three natures of human body – Rajas, Tamas & Satvva) which is treatable. Recommendations include –practicing guided Yoga & Meditations, doing anything you love (your hobbies may be) , Learning, Acceptance, Letting go, Social Service and a calm positive environment.

Nutrition in Depression is though considered as a secondary part of the treatment but it plays a very important role. As it’s said, “What you feed your mind is as important as you feed your body”. So, as filling your mind with positivity is important so as feeding your body with good food. Yes! There is much more beyond medicines also. After all, food is energy to every one of our trillion cells in the body. Now, how we nourish them decides how our body and mind behaves. There is much in food and diet that can impact our mental conditions positively. A diet rich in vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grain, plenty of fruits and balanced diet with less processed but more real food is sure to contribute here. Majorly we recommend including alkaline diet & immunity boosters in your food chart.

Conclusion:  Correct Nutrition can help a person to come out of chronic stress sooner and better, along with medication and meditation.
