Does CrossFit Make Women Bulky?

This is undoubtedly the most thought of concern in any woman’s mind when she is about to transform her body, especially, through CrossFit games. You are indeed intimidated and inspired at the same time with the women who land up a very good physique which is picture perfect and matches your goal. The key is YOUR goal! There is the prime role of your personal goal in achieving your fitness target through CrossFit training. There is absolutely NO set probability that you will gain bulk or will not gain bulk. All depends upon your nutrition which goes in while you are training.

First of all it is very important to understand what is the definition of bulk. Bulk can be defined in two ways:

  1. Bulk can be perceived as large muscles with a layer fat that can make a woman appear big and strong but not defined.
  2. Bulk means large muscles on a person with low body fat which make a person appear ‘cut’, ‘well-defined’ or ‘ripped’. This is what makes the benchmark for all the fitness freaks out there.

The former definition is a non-serious approach towards goals where diet mostly consists of more of carbohydrates and fat and you do not take up a ‘deficit’ diet. A ‘deficit’ diet means cutting out far and carbohydrates from your daily intake to lower the fat percentage in the body because when additional fat is not available, the body uses the already present fat in the body to generate energy.

If you are serious about losing body fat then replace carbs with proteins and that too while watching your macros. If you wish to gain weight then you have to top up your diet with carbs and prescribed fats. This way anyone can cut down or gain proportionately, on top of that a goal-oriented CrossFit training makes sure that you get toned, gain strength, agility and more defined muscles.

Now when you know about what seems as ‘bulk’ might not be the actual ‘bulk’ you aim at and the real game changer is your nutrition; it will become much easier for you to put on desired amount to ‘bulk’ according to your personal goals. Of course CrossFit doesn’t automatically makes every woman bulk up instantly, against their will. It can only yield result if they allow it! So if you do not wish to ‘bulk up’, there are ways to avoid it.

It is important to understand your body before setting up a regimen for yourself both in case of nutrition and training. Women naturally carry more fat, and have significantly less testosterone than men, so it is considerably harder for a woman to gain big and bulky muscles. But if that is your goal and you are thinking of taking building it to the next level, this target is not impossible. It is just that you have to eat accordingly.

Practically, if you are doing CrossFit training and eating right, still feel that you have gained some muscles, well, that is natural because you can’t avoid gaining a well-defined layer of little muscles doing extensive CrossFit and the difference will be little more than what a ‘toned’ woman will look like. So if your goal is NOT to gain any muscle at all then I have bad news for you! CrossFit is not for you! That is because any person sorting to CrossFit training diligently is bound to gain some muscles.

It is important to set your goals. The most common ones can be:

  1. Having strong muscular shoulders, arms and legs (that is adding bulk)
  2. Appear toned with defined body curves
  3. Looking well-cut and defined
  4. Leaning down or reducing body fat
  5. Becoming physically stronger and able to do previously impossible things

Sometimes it is a combination of the above fitness goals for women like leaning down and looking well-defined and curvy at the same time. CrossFit exercises and a proper diet can bulk you up and cut you down depending upon your personal fitness goals.
